JACKSONVILLE, NC (WECT) - Marines from Camp Lejeune will be the first to arrive in Afghanistan this week as part of President Obama's surge plan.
Eight hundred Marines will leave Camp Lejeune Monday night, followed by another 200 by the end of the week. In all, the President has decided to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan.
Admiral Mike Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, flew into Afghanistan Monday to talk about the new strategy to turn around the eight-year war.
Mullen expressed concern about "growing" collusion between Afghan Taliban and Al-Qaeda and other extremist groups sheltering in neighboring Pakistan, where homegrown Taliban attack daily.
