WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A man from Wilmington is giving his wife the gift of life this Christmas season.
Lahonda Johnson's husband Richard is a perfect match for a kidney transplant.
Lahonda has been on a waiting list to get a kidney transplant for a little more than two years, but she never thought the person who would be a match would be the man she's been with for the past six years.
"It was a relief to know that it was my husband and to know it was somebody that was close to me," said Lahonda. "It made me feel better to know it was my husband."
Richard Johnson is elated to know after several unsuccessful attempts to find a kidney donor, he's the one who could give his wife what she needs.
"It was kind of saddening," said Richard. "I know that being on dialysis her whole life would be changed, and that she wouldn't be able to basically live life as she would like to."
Richard Johnson says their story reminds him of one that's in the Bible.
"I think about Adam and Eve. Adam's rib was used to make Eve and I'm thinking my kidney will draw us closer together."
Lahonda Johnson says she couldn't agree more.
"We're part of each other because we're married, and just to know that I have a part of his kidney that'll make us closer."
Although his kidney is a match, Richard still has to go through a few more medical tests before he officially gives his wife a kidney.
The couple expects the transplant to happen at the beginning of the new year.
