WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Future educators put down their pencils to take a final exam by participating in UNCW's 17th annual World Champion Ballroom and Latin Dance Competition.
Thursday, 24 students in the course Educational Dance and Gymnastics K-12, put on their dancing shoes to showcase their skill in seven different dance styles including rumba, waltz, polka, shag, and others.
UNCW judges scored the dancers on their technique, style, and costumes.
The competition focuses on applying physical education skills learned in the classroom.
According to course professor John Bennet, who was a former international ballroom competitor, they teach students that physical fitness is a lifetime pursuit.
"These types of activities are exactly what we hope our students carry into their own classrooms to change the lives of children," said Bennet.
