Law enforcement officers believe a major construction site theft ring may be circulating between 4 coastal counties. Police say, if all the incidents are connected, the thieves could have gotten away with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment.
Just this weekend, thieves struck four different sites in Surf City, taking thousands of dollars worth of equipment. All of the tools were taken from trailers that had locks on them. Police say the thieves left behind no finger prints. They believe the operation is sophisticated because the same pricey items are being stolen all around the area.
Now, the construction companies are trying to find a way to finish their projects after losing so much expensive gear. Some are borrowing equipment from other construction companies. Royal Builders in Topsail Island had to lay off 2 workers to make up for all the money they lost.
Police are tying to link the Surf City thefts to those in other surrounding coastal counties. They say their close to an arrest, but the damage is already done to the struggling builders.
