Wilmington City Council awards bid for bike trail project

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington's City Council held an emergency meeting Friday morning to discuss the next stages of the Cross City bike trail.

Council members decided to award the project to Elite Construction and Grading of Rocky Point.

The funding for the project is being backed by federal stimulus money.

They rushed the meeting because council members are under a deadline and didn't want to wait until their next meeting in January.

The Cross City trail is a 10-mile, off-road, multi-use trail which will provide bicycle and pedestrian access to a number of places in Wilmington.

The trail will make up part of the East Coast Greenway, a multi-use path that will run all the way from Maine to Florida and will be like an "urban Appalachian Trail."
