OGDEN, NC (WECT) - Friends remember Dane Hobbs as a local legend, which is quite a tribute to a man who didn't even have a home.
People who knew him say Hobbs added a lot to the month of December.
Dane liked to make his impromptu "Santa" appearances around Ogden. He could be spotted anywhere, outside gas stations, pharmacies, grocery stores and fast food restaurants.
This holiday season, ask anyone in Ogden, and they'll tell you that something is missing this December - Hobbs passed away in August.
Now a Laney student, Alex Babb, wants to make sure the holiday season doesn't pass without paying tribute to Hobbs. The 17 year old has organized a food drive to benefit area homeless.
Theresa Babb says her family wanted to do something that matched Hobbs' personality and spirit.
"Alex has worked very hard and hopes this event will remind people that there are still those in our community who need help," said Babb. "Dane was a guy who had nothing but the clothes on his back, and yet he did everything to warm your spirits."
The event will take place on December 19 at The Mansion on Market Street from 2pm-7pm.
