WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A group of 31 students from the Atlanta area were rewarded for their reading accomplishments with a plane ride to see Santa Claus in Wilmington.

Each year, Atlantic Southeast Airlines offers a "special sleigh" as part of an adopt-a-school program.

"It's exciting to see these kids and to bring them up and reward them for their efforts in reading," said Kevin Wade with ASA.  "They've been excited, and it's been fantastic to see."

The students from Hendrix Drive Elementary School in Forest Park, GA had high percentages on their reading tests.

They spent the day at the Children's Museum of Wilmington making graham cracker and candy houses and visiting exhibits.

For some, the highlight of their field trip was sitting on Santa's lap, telling him what they hope to get for Christmas.  For others, the thrill was in the plane ride itself, as many had never flown before.
