ABC salaries examined in New Hanover County

WILMINGTON - Despite concerns from the public, two top administrators for the Alcohol Beverage Commission (ABC)  will keep their six-figure salaries.

Billy Williams makes more than $230,000 dollars a year and his son, Bradley makes $115,000.

During a meeting Monday night, ABC board representative Steve Culbreth told New Hanover County Commissioners he voted for the salary increase because he saw a big improvement in sales.

According to Culbreth, the 7 stores in New Hanover County made a 14% profit, which is good compared to the average in other counties across the state. Culbreth also said both father and son have 56 years of experience between them.

During the meeting with Commissioners, he admitted that in hindsight the salaries were too high.

"We made a mistake that's part of life got to admit it," said Culbreth.

Culbreth said Billy Williams salary has reached it's limit and that he will no longer get another raise.

County Commissioners have decided that they will meet with the ABC board regularly to know how ABC is operating.

Both groups plan to meet within the next 90 days.
