WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - 68 years ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called the attack on Pearl Harbor a day that will live in infamy. Monday, veterans in our area were honored during a ceremony at Battleship Park in Wilmington.

Congressman Mike McIntyre and Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo were two of the keynote speakers for the event honoring those who survived the attack and remembering those who lost their lives.

Sailor Harold Garrish survived the attack and said it irritates him when people use the phrase, 'gave their lives.'

"They didn't give their lives, their lives were taken," explained Garrish.

McIntyre presented each of six Navy veterans in attendance with a United States flag that flew over the Capitol building in Washington, DC earlier this year.
