WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A text message helped Wilmington Police catch a student who brought a weapon to school Friday.
The Wilmington Police Department said they received a message through the Text-A-Tip program that a student brought a gun to Hoggard High School.
WPD's school liaison officer at the high school found the student and discovered he was carrying a 6" folding knife in his front pocket, not a gun.
The student was charged with having a weapon on school property and was released to his parents.
The police department launched the Text-A-Tip program in September of 2008 as a way for people to leave anonymous tips.
Send texts to the number 274-637 (CRIMES) and include Tip 708 in the body of the message, along with your tip.
If you can't text, you can also submit anonymously at www.tip708.com.
