NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The HIV virus continues to spread across the globe.
The New Hanover County Health Department hosted a World AIDS Day celebration at the Jervay communities located on 10th and Dawson Street to raise awareness.
People who came to the event got a lot more than just a free testing.
There was live music provided by Z107.5, games, food, prizes and gift cards.
Event organizer Sharema Williams explained why it is so important to get tested, "We need to educate everyone on HIV and find ways to prevent it. And to get tested you know your status. From that point on, you can prevent from either getting it and staying negative and if you are positive, find ways to not re-infect everyone else."
Williams also said that abstinence is the best way to protect yourself, but practicing safe sex, such as wearing condoms, is the next best thing.
