NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County Commissioners say they are trying to get to the bottom of high salaries for the county's ABC Board.

Reports have been circulating that Billy Williams, the administrator for the board, makes $232,200 each year.  That number is more than twice the amount most ABC administrators earn around the state of North Carolina.

Williams' son, Bradley Williams, serves as the assistant manager for the organization and makes $115,000 every year.

According to commissioners, many people have been calling and e-mailing concerned about the large paychecks of the ABC Board, especially in tough economic times.

"These questions that people have need to be answered," said Commission Chair Ted Davis, Jr.  "And since I think this is a hot topic right now and everybody's really concerned about it right now, that we need to address it right now."

During an agenda meeting Thursday night, commissioners decided to request ABC Board representatives attend their Monday meeting to explain the facts and figures for the public.

County leaders also want to clarify they do not set the salaries for ABC Board members, the commission only appoints the people who serve on the board.

Commissioner Jason Thompson urged the county to ask for more transparency in the operation of the ABC Board through more regular reporting to the county.

The county commission will meet Monday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse on Third Street in downtown Wilmington.
