NHC school board approves plans for field house renovations

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the design for renovating the field house at New Hanover High School.

The facility was condemned earlier this year, so players had to use a makeshift locker room. New Hanover football players were stuck changing in a steamy equipment room with no place to shower.

In September, the school board voted unanimously to renovate the field house to include new electric and HVAC systems.

Board members were concerned the facility wouldn't meet Title IX guidelines because it only has one locker room. Those in charge of the building say it will meet regulations, because it is used alternately by boys and girls sports.

The school board has budgeted just over $750,000 for the field house renovations.  They said they will begin advertising for construction bids in January and hope to have it finished by next year's football season.
