Turtle Hospital is ready for a new shell

Reported by Doug Wahl - email

The Karen Beasely Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center has received approval for a crucial development permit. The move should pave the way for construction of a major expansion.

The center, which opened in 1997, has plans to build a new 12 thousand square foot location in the next year, followed by a five thousand square foot expansion within the next few years. Both sites will be located in Topsail Island.

Beasely told us today that she is still trying to raise an estimated $300,000 to pay for the project but is convinced that a ground breaking can take place before the end of the year.

Since opening, the center has rescued 250 sea turtles and placed them back in the wild. Currently the center is taking care of 31 turtles.
