WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - As Black Friday inches closer, several locally owned businesses tried to beat retail giants by having sales before the big national shopping day.

On Sunday, workers at No-Fo in Wilmington kept busy. The store, along with many others in The Forum shopping center had a "Beat Black Friday" extravaganza sale.

Store manager Kima Nixon said the pre-Black Friday sale helped business.

"I would say it was up 15 to 20 percent," Nixon said.

She's hoping the momentum of the sale will carry over to a successful Black Friday.

"We don't have the blockbuster sales the big stores have or the mall has, but we do have a lot to offer," Nixon said.

For Pat Prince, the early sales allowed her to get some Christmas shopping finished early.

"That is the one day I do not shop other than on my computer or through email or something," said Prince. "No, not going to get out with the crowds."

Prince said the early bird sales also reminded her of the advantage local businesses have that big retail stores don't.

"There's certain places I shop here; they know what I like and if they get something they think I might enjoy they'll even give me a call," said Prince.

his year she's noticing more pre-Black Friday sales, citing what she called some amazing deals on clothing.

A few stores down, at Blue Hand Home, Arnie Cullipher was setting up for what he believes will be a busy week.

"We are optimistic about Black Friday," said Cullipher. "I know just going over, getting a cup of coffee at Mayfaire, cars are always in the parking lots. People won't even be able to get through, and it's about to get even tougher. We all benefit from that."
With the countdown on until the biggest shopping day of the year, customers are waiting on the bargains, and store managers are waiting on their business.
