WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Part of Market Street around 17th Street was shut down Friday night because of a crash.

A speeding pick-up truck traveling west on Market Street, collided with a car stopped at the light at 17th and Market Streets around 10pm.

The truck then hit a utility pole and flipped. The driver and passenger in the truck were ejected. Authorities believe they were not wearing their seatbelts, and do not believe alcohol was involved.

One man ejected form the truck died at the scene. He has been identified as Michael Demetrius Clemmons, age 31, of Southport.

The other person in the truck was Derrick Odell Moore, age 29, also of Southport. As of early Saturday morning, Mr. Moore was at NHRMC in very serious but stable condition.

Three people, two female and one male, in the other vehicle were transported to the hospital but their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Investigators believe the pick-up may have struck another car in a hit-and-run collision just before the crash at 17th and Market Streets.

The driver of the car told police that he was at 23rd and Market Streets when his car was struck repeatedly from behind by a pick-up truck that then sped away. The driver of the car was shaken up but declined to be transported for treatment.

Wilmington police are still investigating the accident.
