WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Jay Leno makes viewers laugh every night on WECT, but local comedians make residents laugh every Thursday night in Wilmington. So how hard is it to make people laugh?
Some of the funniest people in the area tell their jokes free of charge at the Nutt Street Comedy Room in downtown Wilmington. Every Thursday night working comedians and newbies get on stage for the open mic.
WECT's Colin Hackman took a challenge to get on stage and try to make a room full of strangers laugh. He said his nerves started to get to him a week before the show, which he found wasn't unusual for professional and amateurs alike.
"I was really nervous at first, but once I got up there it was good," said comedian Michelle Gagliano.
Before the show, Colin ran through his jokes with Timmy Sherrill who is the co-owner and host of the Nutt Street Comedy Room. Sherrill gave Colin a few last minute pointers and threw him under the lights.
"This man coming on stage, has never done standup before, so please give him all the love you can give him. Let him know how you feel, moment by moment," Timmy announced to the crowd.
After a few jokes and some laughing, Colin was off to the races with the hardest thing he says he's ever done on stage.
In the end, Colin said he was left with a new respect for the comedians who try to make people laugh everyday.
