BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An old grocery store in Brunswick County has been transformed into a place where senior citizens can prosper in their golden years.

According to Brunswick County Senior Center Director, Jim Russell, words can't begin to describe the feeling of accomplishment that comes with the new facility.

Their old building was only 900 square feet, where this one is 13,000 square feet, providing opportunities for the seniors.

"It's really nice compared to where we were," said Charles Brice.  "There is room to move around.  You have room to learn new and other things.  They have a library and a computer room."

Additionally, there is a fitness room and a cafeteria.

"It's a great facility," said Laura Henderson.  "I'm glad it's in Southport.  It's nice to have it in a mile radius and not have to travel all over the county."

The facility will have it's grand opening celebration Saturday, November 21.

There are plans to open four other senior centers in Brunswick County - in Leland, Shallotte, Calabash, and Supply.
