NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Law enforcement officers across North Carolina now have better access to warrant information.

The state has just started a system called AWARE.

The system links the court system with law enforcement databases so officers on the street will now know instantly if someone has a warrant for their arrest.

It will also give police departments access to records all over North Carolina, meaning if someone is wanted in another county, they will know.
"Currently, once a warrant is issued by a magistrate, there is a delay in law enforcement being notified that paper has been issued and this system is designed to eliminate that," explains Deputy Charles Smith of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
AWARE will also give magistrate courts more background on offenders, including previous crimes in other areas.
