PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A student at Topsail High School died earlier this month from complications caused by the H1N1 virus, according to Pender County Health Officials.
The 16-year-old student died Nov. 6 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, but confirmation was received from state labs Nov. 12.
Shirely Steele, clinic nursing supervisor for Pender County's Health Department, said a letter was sent home with students Monday to inform parents that state public health lab officials tested a specimen from the student and confirmed the virus.
Pender Schools Superintendent Allison Sholar extended condolences to the student's family and friends in her letter.
Sholar wants to remind parents that these events are rare, and pointed out that the CDC is not recommending school closures for suspected or confirmed cases of H1N1.
