My Turn, Your Turn: Begin the Conversation

By Gary McNair - bio|email

Are you a procrastinator?  The sad truth is most of us are.  It's our nature to put things off.  You wouldn't think putting off talking about something would cause any problems, but postponing talking about, and making decisions, on personal health care can cause huge problems for you and your loved ones.

We talk about a lot of things with friends and family, but we don't seem to want to talk about planning for a time when we can no longer make rational decisions about our health care.  But we need to - we really do.

That's why Lower Cape Fear Hospice is embarking on a yearlong campaign called "Begin the Conversation."  They want us to begin having the necessary conversations with our doctor and family when we are clear thinking and not under pressure.  That's when we have the best chance of making good decisions.

You know what I'm talking about.  If it hasn't happened in your family, you know someone who's had to suffer through the consequences of not talking and not planning.

For many, it's the elephant in the room, and it's best not to ignore it.  Hospice can help you with some tools on their website.  Don't delay.  Begin the conversation now.
