Looking for artists to add a sculpture to the convention center

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - As construction continues on the new convention center in downtown Wilmington, the city hopes to add some local ties to the plans.

Area artists can submit a design for a sculpture contest, with the dram tree as their theme.

The tree once marked an entrance for ships on the Cape Fear River.  Sailors made a toast to safe passage as they floated by the tree.

"When you come out of the convention center, there's an events lawn and then the Riverwalk and you'll see on the events lawn the dram tree, and we'll have the legend of the dram tree," said Beverly Tetterton with the New Hanover Co. Library.  "Hopefully visitors will like it and hopefully locals who walk along the Riverwalk will like it too."

The winning sculpture will be placed where everyone can see it.

Artists have until January 4th to submit their design and the winner will be announced January 29.

Applications for the sculpture design competition are available at: www.wilmingtonnc.gov/dramtree and in the City Hall Annex located at 305 Chestnut Street, 3rd floor.
