WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The future of the shipping industry in North Carolina was discussed Tuesday during the annual State of the Ports address.

According to NC State Ports Authority CEO Thomas J. Eagar, cargo moving in and out of the port is up 28%.
But, he also said since the housing market was in a slump lumber and steal coming through the port is down significantly.

"Well, I think the message is we're extremely well positioned to weather the storm," said Eagar.  "We're certainly encouraged by what we see transpiring even today although there is some cautious optimism involved in that, but we're excited about the future for the port of Wilmington and Morehead City."

Close to 100 people attended the State of the Port address at the Roudabush building, making it the highest attended address.
