NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of runners laced up their shoes to benefit the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla at Wrightsville Beach.

The race was the 2nd annual Flotilla 5k and raised money for the Holiday Flotilla.

The two day celebration includes a tree lighting ceremony, boat parade and fireworks display.

WECT's own Jon Evans hosted the race and logged a pretty impressive time too.

We caught up with the top runners after they crossed the finish line.

"I was at the north channel turn around when someone said 1st female. I had a good idea I might win. It's a great race. It is my first year running. I feel like it was a great turnout for a great cause," said the women's winner, Elizabeth Mulligan, who logged 19 minutes, 52 seconds.

"It's a pretty fast race because it's flat, so times are generally faster than normal races. It's fun," said the men's winner, Devin Dixon, who logged 16 minutes, 51 seconds.

The Holiday Flotilla festivities begin Thanksgiving weekend. The Flotilla itself is Saturday, November 28th.
