WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - At Mayfaire Town Center, art students from each New Hanover County high school participated in the 16th annual sidewalk chalk art competition.

The students had only two hours to design their displays. Once the two hours were up, judges critiqued the masterpieces and the winners got to take home a plaque to hang in their school.
Organizers say the event is not just educational, but a great way for students to learn how to work well in teams.

"This is a collaborative venture. The kids have to come together as a team... create a design and execute the design. It's a different skill set for art students," says Georgeann Haas of New Hanover County Schools.

The students from Ashley High School took home the plaque this year.

Some New Hanover County middle school art students also participated to prepare them for when they enter high school.
