Pender Co. school board approves land for library expansion

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Pender County school board met Monday night to discuss several important issues.

One of the main issues they talked about involves some complaints from the NAACP against board chairman Tom Roper.

Roper has been on the board for 16 years and is accused of missing meetings and displaying improper behavior towards people from diverse backgrounds.

Roper addressed those claims Monday night, saying they are false.  Of hundreds of meetings, Roper says he's only missed about five.  He continued saying that anyone who knows him would agree the claims of improper behavior are far from the truth.

Also during the meeting, the school board voted unanimously to lease three acres of land to county commissioners in Hampstead.  The land is behind the library and will be used to create an annex between Topsail schools and the library.

Commissioners already have close to $200,000 set aside for phase one of the library expansion.
