WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Parties took place statewide Wednesday night to commemorate the election of President Barack Obama one year ago.
More than a hundred Wilmington residents took part in parties in our area - one at a home in Landfall, the other at Reel Cafe in downtown Wilmington.
Party-goers at Rich Wasch's home in Landfall said they were happy to mark the one year anniversary of President Obama's big win. Many of them celebrated together on election night in 2008 and for the President's Inauguration.
Some have criticized the President over the past few months for overspending and not living up to his campaign promises, but many at the party say he needs time to fix the country's problems.
"Anyone who thinks that he's going to come in and make wholesale changes very quickly, that's crazy," said Wasch. "He was handed a very difficult situation and he needs to do two things and the country knows he needs to do two things and he knows it. Number one, he needs to get the economy on a solid footing, that means growth and jobs. Number two, he needs to manage the deficit."
Others say they still can't believe and African-American is in the White House and are thrilled with the way that has brought Americans together.
