NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Environmental Protection Agency is raising concerns about a preliminary permit issued to a proposed cement plant.

Carolinas Cement Company, a subsidiary of Titan America, plans to build a plant in the Castle Hayne area of New Hanover County.

In a letter to the state, EPA officials raise concerns that regulations mentioned in the permit are less stringent than new federal rules to take effect next year.

Opponents of the plant say it poses health risks to humans and the environment, while supporters say it will bring many new jobs.
