NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Relay for Life of New Hanover County has been nationally recognized for its efforts in the community.

The organization received the American Cancer Society's Power of Hope Award, which honors Relay for Life events that are number one in the nation for registering cancer survivors per capita in their population grouping.

Wanda Bass, Survivor Committee Chair, helped to lead the Relay For Life of New Hanover County, which raised more than $482,000. New Hanover County recognized more than 1,100 survivors through Relay For Life, and 254 teams participated in the overall event.

"The cancer survivors are the reason that we Relay," said Bass. "They are the proof that Relay For Life is winning the fight, and every dollar raised means we are one step closer to finding the cure."
