Children learn the importance of seat belt safety

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Seat belt use in 2009 stands at 84 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NHTSA reports seat belt use has been increasing steadily since 1994, accompanied by a steady decline in the percentage of unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities.

Friday, children with the Community Boys and Girls Club learned about the importance of buckling up.

For the fourth year, Just in Motion hosted a hands-on event for kids to see what it's like to be in an accident. Children hopped on the Seat Belt Convincer to feel the impact of being hit at 8 mph.

Event organizers say the interactive lesson on seat belt safety is one that most kids never forget.
