WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Tigers will play their championship football game Saturday in honor of their head coach who passed away earlier in the week.

Not only was William Murphy the head coach of the Wilmington Tigers, he was also a long-serving member of the Wilmington community.  Murphy passed away October 18 at the age of 74.

Murphy was in his third-year as head coach, and the Tigers are scheduled to host the Mason Dixon Football League Championship game Saturday.  Kick off will take place at 7:00 Saturday evening at Legion Stadium as the Tigers host the Big Reds from Maryland.

The coach was going to be indicted into the Mason Dixon Football League's Hall of Fame, and now his family will accept the honor on his behalf.

A visitation will take place Saturday evening from 4:30-8:00 at the Martin Luther King Center.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, October 25 at Williston Middle School.  The service is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm.
