CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Resident in Carolina Beach woke up to the sight and smell of a thick black cloud of smoke Friday morning.

"I looked out the door and noticed the camper was engulfed in flames," said neighbor Robert Higdon.  "Flames [were] as high as the trees above."

The fire broke out shortly after 7:00 am on Third Street.  It took firefighters about half an hour to extinguish the flames, and the winnebago was destroyed in the blaze.

"It hits close to home," said Higdon.  "It's scary.  You didn't know what would happen, but thank goodness they got here quickly, and got it under control."

The Carolina Beach Police Department is ruling the fire suspicious, because the owner of the winnebago said he saw someone under the vehicle when the fire took place.

"We've collected some evidence on the scene and will determine if it's arson or not," said Chief William Younginer.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Carolina Beach Police Department, (910) 458-2540.
