PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Pender County health officials are pushing for more restrictions on where people can smoke.
Right now smoking isn't allowed inside county buildings, but members of the health department want to expand that regulation to all county property, inside and out.
The commissioners said they wanted to get more information on how employees and the community would feel about the ban.
The issue will be raised again during a future meeting.
Earlier this year Governor Bev Perdue signed a bill banning smoking in all state bars and restaurants.
Perdue said the smoking restrictions are a historic step to protect health in what is still the country's biggest tobacco-growing state.
The legislation was backed by health advocates and opposed by lawmakers from areas where tobacco-growing and cigarette factories are big employers.
