NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Kayakers will come together this weekend to clean up an island on the Cape Fear River.
The Cape Fear River Watch is looking for volunteers to paddle out Sunday, Oct. 25, and clean up Island 13, which is located near the foot of Independence Blvd.
"The island is covered with cans, bottles, abandoned camping items, and debris that have washed up from the river," said UNCW Assistant Director for Campus Recreation Audra Trnovec-Keller, CRSS. "You can't take two steps without finding something."
There is so much trash on the island, the group plans to fill up kayaks and boats with what is collected. Green Coast Recycling will be recycling all plastic bottles and cans collected.
Volunteers are asked to meet at Watermark Marina of Wilmington at noon and work until 4:00 pm.
