NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A second inmate currently incarcerated in New Hanover County is on the list of twenty who will be released from prison next week.
Alford Jones is being imprisoned in New Hanover County. In the late 1970s, Jones was convicted of killing a store owner, William Turner, in Lenoir County.
James Pone is also serving time in New Hanover County, after a 1970s era conviction for the killing of a taxi driver. Pone, Jones and 18 others were sentenced to life in prison, but are now eligible for release after a state Supreme Court decision defining a life sentence in that time period.
North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue has already expressed her concern over this court decision. Her advisers are looking at all options. Federal prosecutors acknowledge they are also looking for ways to keep the men behind bars.
