WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The city of Wilmington allows officers to take cruisers home in an effort to improve response times.  Police credit that policy for helping stop a recent burglary call.

Thomas Jeffery Matthews was recently charged with Burglary, larceny and possession of burglary tools after an incident on Reilly Drive on Sunday.

Police say an officer was driving on Bragg Drive, when a citizen flagged him down to say they heard glass breaking in the area.  Officers surrounded a house where they found broken glass on Reilly Drive and ordered Matthews out of the home.

Police say this take home policy gives more flexibility to officers when responding to calls during off hours.
