WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The crew for the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence boarded the vessel Wednesday morning for a trip to the North.
The Diligence pulled away from Wilmington's Riverfront around 8:00 and drifted along the river to Oak Island.
Wilmington resident Weston Aiken and his father, who is in the Navy League, were invited to ride with the crew as the Diligence made its way to the CG station at the island.
"We had a blast meeting the crew and learning about day-to-day life in the Coast Guard and living on the Diligence," said Aiken.
Now, instead of going on a mission, the vessel is heading to Baltimore for maintenance work. There's no word on how long the Diligence will be gone, but it's expected to need some extensive maintenance.
