WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Over the weekend, local artists took advantage of the opportunity to show off their work at "Art in the Arboretum."
Anne McCombie is one of the artists who participated. She said the show is a way to showcase the work that's being overlooked in this area.
According to McCombie, the economy has turned art galleries into a revolving door, and places where she used to display her art have closed up shop.
"You used to walk down the streets downtown, and almost every other space was a place to exhibit your work. Now you walk, and those spaces are empty or have turned into bars," McCombie said.
According to artist Jenny McKinnon Wright, local artists are taking the creativity they normally put into paintings and putting it towards selling more art.
"It's really tough," said McKinnon. "Personally, I've lowered prices of my work. I've seen galleries get very creative having events, classes, as well as promoting their artwork."
More than 100 artists attended the art show this year, and despite there being a limited number of venues to display their work, they said they won't let it interfere with their passion.
