NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Representatives form the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office destroyed over 3,000 items that have been seized from Courthouse visitors.

New Hanover County Courthouse Deputies confiscate items that are not allowed in the building on a daily basis.  Those items were disposed of under an order of destruction Wednesday.

An alligator machine located on Highway 421, broke up each item deputies have collected by individuals entering the courthouse since 2005.  They destroyed everything from a fork to a pistol.

"Anyone who has something that is obviously used as a weapon, we will charge," said Sheriff Ed McMahon.  "As far as pocket knives and things like that  - we give people an opportunity to bring those back to their car.  There's no room for any type of weapon like that."

Authorities said banning the items in addition to the installation of metal detectors in 2005 have made the Courthouse safer.
