CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Town Officials are talking about ways to make Dow Road in Carolina Beach safer.
"About once a month I can hear the accidents strictly from my front porch," said Hallie Rimer who lives off of Dow Road.
Every day, an estimated 8,000 people use Dow Road, which connects Carolina Beach to Kure Beach.
The Department of Transportation and local traffic planners want to hear what the public thinks about widening the highly traveled road.
"I think it'll help people not veer off the road," said Rimer. "You have to stop suddenly and there's no chance or you not having an accident."
Right now if drivers swerve off Dow Road there isn't any extra pavement to help them gain control of their cars, but if an expansion happens, the pavement will be extended 5 feet.
Carolina Beach City Council Member Alan Gilbert said a wider road would also benefit cyclists and pedestrians who walk along the road.
Dow Road is already on the DOT's list for improvements. Carolina Beach City Council members hope Monday night's discussion will help move the issue to the top of the list.
