WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington-based drug dealer will serve almost 20 years in prison.
New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David said Shawn Powell is part of a larger drug organization that fed cocaine, heroine, and ecstasy into the area.
The District Attorney's Office was able to try him under the cross-designated federal prosecutor program, which allows local attorneys to try criminals under stricter federal laws.
It also gives them more leverage when trying to get information from suspects about other crimes.
"So, we're getting more man years in prison," said David. "We're getting a lot more information, and I believe we're fighting crime in a new way that's really producing results and I'm very proud that my office is partnering with the federal authorities to make that happen."
