Southport could host country's biggest Mackerel fishing tournament

Posted by Debra Worley - email

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Town of Southport is on track to host, what could be, the country's biggest Mackerel fishing tournament.

Hundreds of fishermen from around the country are in town for the 31st US Open King Mackerel Tournament.

Organizers spent much of Thursday putting finishing touches on last minute preparations for the weekend tournament.

This King Mackerel fish-off is the largest in the state, and more than 425 participants will make it the largest in the country.

Last year 430 fishermen registered for the tournament.  Organizers are expecting more participants this year because gas prices have dropped.

Registration ends at midnight Oct. 1 and kicks off at 7:00 Friday morning.  The first place winner will take home $25,000.
