NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The official 2010 Azalea Festival art poster was unveiled Friday at Airlie Gardens.

Local artist Sandy Nelson painted this year's winning picture.  It shows part of Airlie Gardens, the location that Azalea officials chose as the inspiration for next year's poster. Nelson painted the picture in April and said it's an honor to be selected.

"It's the pavilion on the lake of Airlie Gardens," said Nelson.  "It's very impressionistic, lots of beautiful color. I think people are going to be really happy and really maybe surprised at this piece compared to previous years. It's more fine art than poster."

On Friday night when the painting was unveiled, several hundred invited guests crowded beneath a large, white tent to get a glimpse of the artwork. A cheer went up as Nelson unveiled it, along with one other painting depicting a live oak tree.

Nelson will hold a painting clinic Saturday at the Fountainside Gallery on Eastwood Road from 2:00-6:00 pm.

The 2010 Azalea Festival will take place April 7-11.
