COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A fire broke out at Carolina Tire Sales on North Wilkes Street in Chadbourn early Tuesday morning. Almost two days later, emergency workers were still on the scene fighting the flames and smoke.
Crews spend most of Wednesday tearing down what was left standing after flames tore through the warehouse, but their work is far from being finished.
"It looks like our emergency workers are going to need some long term support on this one," said Sheri Frost with the American Red Cross. "I think they've done a great job of making sure the perimeters are good, so I feel comfortable with our volunteers being here. But, there's a lot of smoke, it's very hot, and they're going to be here for a while."
Officials say even though they have the fire contained, they expect the smoldering to continue for at least another 5 days.
"The fire is contained, but is the fire out? No, however the fire is a lot closer to being out," said Town Manager Stevie Cox.
Crews used some of the debris and rubble to form fire break lines to help contain the fire.
Officials say environmental issues are the biggest danger for people in Chadbourn. Red Cross workers plan to knock on doors to tell residents how to protect themselves from the smoke.
