WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Port is continuing their quest to go green.

Officials with the port showed off some of the latest technology for diesel emissions control Wednesday morning.

The new, environmentally friendly equipment includes a hybrid electric truck to move containers around the port.  It reduces fuel use by 50 percent.

The port already has nine top lifters that operate on bio diesel and have installed high efficiency lights.  Officials are also looking into installing solar panels at their Morehead City warehouse.

"We see our industry changing, we recognize that to be good environmental stewards within our community we do need to change," said NC State Ports Authority CEO Tom Eager.  "The science and technology and engineering that's being made available to us today allow us to make these changes at a lower cost then maybe 10 years ago."

Eager said the port is trying to get federal grants to purchase several electric hybrid trucks.
