SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) - Construction will soon be underway for a new 70,000 foot shopping center in Surf City.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place Monday for Surf City Crossing, which is being built at the intersection of Wilkes Road and Highway 210.
The shopping center will feature restaurants, shops, and a state-of-the-art Harris Teeter.
"We've actually gotten a lot of calls and interest from tenants, so the economy is a little slow but we don't anticipate it affecting us at all," said developer Ken Hocker.
The shopping center will cost about $12 million, which won't cost tax payers anything. The Harris Teeter in Surf City is expected to open in late 2010.
A new Harris Teeter is also opening in Wilmington Wednesday, bringing more than 100 employees. The grocery store is located in the Long Leaf Mall on Shipyard Boulevard and replaces and older store.
The new Harris Teeter is 10,000 square feet bigger than the old one.
