WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A new signal system should help traffic flow better in the Wilmington area.

Traffic engineers began the lengthy process at the intersection of Independence and Shipyard Boulevard by installing a new traffic control box.

The city will put the control boxes at more than 200 intersections throughout the city and in parts of the county.

"Our region has grown dramatically since 1991 and 1992 and we can't build that many more roads in the city of Wilmington or even in the county of New Hanover," said Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo.  "This will give us a very efficient way to move traffic through our community. This also reduces the amount of gas you use. So this is a great thing for our community."

The city and DOT is funding the $10 million project that should be complete by fall 2010.
