NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Some moms are using their children as part of a new workout that's becoming an international sensation.

Stroller Strides is a group of new moms who come together to exercise with their kids.  Instead of letting their babies slow down their workout, they make them part of it.

Mother Kim Whalen said the exercise program is a win-win situation for both mom and baby.

"I've joined a gym before and I just felt that this group would be better to meet other moms and become part of the community," said Whalen.

As the moms walk or run with their strollers they are doing more than getting back in shape, they are shaping their child to lead a healthy lifestyle.

"I think it does influence his health habits, because he gets to see that I find working out and staying active important," said Whalen.  "I can only hope that this will rub off on him as well."

Owner of the Wilmington Stroller Strides, Jody Smith, uses songs to keep the kids engaged in the workout.

"We sing songs and do educational activities, so they are learning to count, and learn the alphabet, and colors, that sort of thing along with us," said Smith.  "So it's not only exercise and fun for us, it's fun for baby too."

In just one hour moms can say bye-bye to baby weight and hello to a new body, new friends, and a new bond with their child.

All classes are taught by certified instructors who are also moms themselves.
