WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department will soon be cruising around town in a newly painted van bearing the Text-a-Tip message.
The van will frequently be placed in various locations to raise awareness about the anonymous texting program, in addition to its general use in the WPD fleet.
The Text-a-Tip program was introduced last year and enables users to text confidential information and remain totally anonymous.
Text messages are sent to CRIMES (274637). Messages go to a national server and are stripped of identifying information before being forwarded to the Police Department.
How to Text-a-Tip:
- Text TIP708 and your message to CRIMES (274637). Your message must begin with TIP708. "Tip708" must appear in the text messages, because many law enforcement agencies around the country use the same server.
- When your message is received at CRIMES, your name and cell phone number are stripped from the message before it is forwarded to the Police Department.
- You receive an immediate text reply that will include a confidential I.D. number.
- If you use Text-a-Tip again, you may include your confidential I.D. number, but it is your choice. Text-a-Tip is totally anonymous.
For more information, go to www.tip708.com.
Wilmington's Text-a-Tip program is the first law enforcement text messaging program in the Cape Fear region. Similar programs have been introduced within the past year in several larger cities in the country.
