CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Lifeguards will no longer be on duty at Carolina Beach starting 5:00 Monday evening.
Lifeguards say they have dealt with a large number of rip currents this year, but being proactive has helped them save many lives.
"We've changed our policies a lot of things are done a little different now," says Simon Sanders, Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue. "This season compared to other seasons, we're a lot more proactive then we have been in years past and people are listening to lifeguards taking warnings."
Carolina Beach Fire Department will now respond to any water rescues. The lifeguards will return to the beach Memorial Day 2010.
Wrightsville Beach lifeguards will be on duty until October.
